COSHH Hazard Symbols

Why you need it

Kitchens use oven cleaners, descalers and disinfectants that can burn skin, damage eyes or harm breathing. Under COSHH, employers must assess the risks from hazardous substances and give staff the information and training to use them safely.

Recognising the symbols on a label is the first step.

What it’s for

All nine CLP hazard pictograms with a short explanation of each, from explosive and flammable to corrosive, serious health hazard and environmental hazard. It reminds staff that symbols alone are not enough: read the label, the safety data sheet and your workplace instructions.

How to use it

1. Fix it in or beside the chemical store, where staff pick up cleaning products.
2. Match each product you use to its symbols and keep its safety data sheet in your COSHH file.
3. Keep chemicals in their original labelled containers, away from food.
4. Provide the gloves and eye protection the label asks for, and check staff wear them.
5. Use it during COSHH training so staff can name each symbol.
