About the three scores
At an inspection, a council food safety officer scores three areas: how hygienically food is handled, the condition and cleanliness of the premises, and how food safety is managed. The rating from 0 to 5 comes from those scores together, and a lower score in each area is better. How a food hygiene rating is worked out.
In Scotland the scheme is different: businesses get a Pass or Improvement Required, and separate scores are not published.
Ratings come live from the official Food Hygiene Rating Scheme data, used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We don't store them, and we don't predict ratings: only a council food safety officer can give one. Always check the official page for the definitive rating.
