Fire Safety Awareness (Fire Marshal)

Every workplace has to have people who know what to do when the alarm sounds. This course is for the ones who get the job: fire marshals and fire wardens, and anyone who wants to understand how fire safety actually works where they work.

Who this course is for

Written for the person who has been handed the hi-vis tabard and told they are the fire marshal, with the examples drawn from the places our learners actually work:

• Kitchens, restaurants, pubs and bars
• Schools, nurseries and out-of-school clubs
• Care homes and supported living
• Shops, offices, warehouses and anywhere else with a fire plan
• Managers who need to know what their marshals should be doing

What you’ll learn

• Who carries the legal duty for fire safety, and what the law requires of them
• What changed on 1 October 2023, when every business had to start writing its fire risk assessment down in full
• How fire starts and spreads, why smoke is the real danger, and the fire risks specific to your setting
• The five steps of a fire risk assessment, and the everyday checks that keep a building the way the assessment assumed
• Alarms, emergency lighting, fire doors and escape routes, and what to look at on your rounds
• Which extinguisher suits which fire, and the harder judgement: when to tackle one and when to walk away
• Running an evacuation, helping people who need it, accounting for everyone, and what happens afterwards

How it works

Six lessons, each split into short topics with a practice game at the end, grouped into three modules. Each module finishes with an assessment of 10 questions drawn at random from a larger bank, so no two attempts are the same. The course ends with a final exam of 20 questions drawn from a bank of 40 covering everything. The pass mark is 80% and you get three attempts at each assessment. Finish the course and your certificate, with your name and a reference anyone can check, is issued to My Account → Certificates.

Worth being clear about: this is knowledge training. It gives a marshal the understanding behind the job, and it sits alongside your own site induction, your building’s fire plan and any hands-on training your employer arranges, such as using an extinguisher for real. It does not replace them, and it is not a substitute for your premises’ own fire risk assessment.
