Description

Fire safety training for the people who take charge when the alarm sounds. This course explains who holds the legal duty for fire safety under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, what section 156 of the Building Safety Act 2022 changed on 1 October 2023, and how the law differs in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It covers how fire starts and spreads, why smoke is the biggest danger, and the risks specific to kitchens, bars, schools, nurseries and care homes. You will work through the five steps of a fire risk assessment, the checks a marshal makes on an ordinary day, what alarms, emergency lighting, fire doors and escape routes are for, how to choose the right extinguisher and when to leave a fire alone, and how to run an evacuation, account for everyone and handle what comes afterwards. Six lessons, six practice games, three assessments and a final exam, with a certificate issued the moment you pass. This is knowledge training: it supports, but does not replace, your site induction, your building’s fire plan, practical extinguisher training or your premises’ own fire risk assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a fire marshal qualification?

It is knowledge training for fire marshals and wardens, not a regulated qualification. It gives you the understanding behind the role and a certificate you can show your employer, and it sits alongside your site induction, your building’s fire plan and any hands-on training your employer arranges.

Does it cover the law outside England and Wales?

The course is built on the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which covers England and Wales. It explains where Scotland and Northern Ireland differ, including who carries the duty in each, so you know what to check if you work across the UK.

Will it teach me to use a fire extinguisher?

It teaches you which extinguisher suits which fire, how each type is used and, most importantly, when to tackle a fire and when to leave it. Actually discharging an extinguisher is practical training your employer arranges on site, and this course does not replace it.

How long does it take, and what happens at the end?

About two hours, taken at your own pace on any device. Each of the three modules ends with an assessment of 10 questions drawn at random from a bigger bank, and the course finishes with a 20-question final exam. The pass mark is 80% with three attempts, and your certificate is issued the moment you pass.

Who should take it?

Anyone nominated as a fire marshal or fire warden, and anyone who wants to understand fire safety where they work. The examples come from kitchens, bars, schools, nurseries and care homes, but the law and the principles are the same in any workplace.
