How each lesson works

Listen, play, then a picture quiz

Every lesson has the same three steps, so you always know what comes next.

An audio lesson: the chef at a prep table, with the words highlighted as they are read out loud

Listen

A short audio lesson

Each topic is read out loud, and the words light up as you hear them. Press play to hear it again as many times as you like.

The handwashing game: hands covered in cartoon germs at a sink, with soap and paper towels

Play

Hands-on games

Do the job yourself in the kitchen: wash your hands, stock the fridge, pick the right chopping board. If something goes wrong, the game shows you why and you try again.

A picture quiz: which habit helps keep food safe, with three picture answers

Picture quiz

Answer with pictures

Short questions with picture answers. Every question and answer can be read out loud, so there’s no need to read.

At the end

A practical picture quiz of 20 questions

When all six lessons are done, the final quiz checks what you remember, using pictures from the kitchen.

What it’s for

Two jobs, one game

Practice for our Level 1 course

The game covers the same topics as our Level 1 Food Hygiene Awareness course. Play it before the course and you’ll start already knowing what it’s about. Play it after, and it keeps what you learned fresh.

It’s practice only: there’s no certificate for the game yet.

Training that doesn’t depend on reading

The law says everyone who handles food at work must be trained or supervised in food hygiene, to suit the job they do. But almost all food hygiene training is reading, then a written test. For a lot of people, the reading is the hard part, not the food safety.

Five Star Kitchen teaches the same rules by doing, with as few words as possible, and it can read every one of them out loud.

Why we’re making it

Good at the job shouldn’t mean good at reading

Food hygiene training has always been words on a screen. That works for many people, but it shuts others out: people with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD or dyslexia, people who learn better in different ways or settings, and people still learning English. Plenty of them would be good at the job and still struggle with the course.

Kitchens are where many people find their first job, including people supported by colleges, day services and supported employment schemes. A food hygiene certificate is often the first thing a kitchen asks for, and we want that first step to be one everyone can take.

So we’re building training you play. You learn each rule by doing it, the game can read everything out loud, and when something goes wrong it shows you why and lets you try again.

How it helps

Built for learners, and the people who support them

Learners

Habits, not just answers

Doing the right thing again and again, like washing your hands properly or using the right chopping board, builds habits you take into a real kitchen. Mistakes are safe in the game, so you can try without worrying about getting it wrong.

Colleges, schools and day services

A lesson they can do

A food hygiene lesson your learners can do on their own or with support, at their own speed. It runs in a web browser on a computer or tablet, with nothing to install.

Kitchens and employers

Ready before day one

New starters can practise the basics before they take their course or start their first shift, so the rules already make sense when they meet them for real.

Accessibility

Made for people with SEN and disabilities

Calm, clear and at your own pace. Here’s what the game does now, and what we’re working on next.

In the game now
  • Everything can be read out loud
  • No time pressure: take as long as you need
  • Mistakes are explained, then you try again
  • Hands-on tasks and pictures instead of long text
  • Settings for larger text, less movement, the names of each place in the kitchen, and colour names on boards and knives
  • Works with a mouse, a touchscreen or a keyboard
  • Your progress saves to your account as you go
What we’re working on
  • Ways for colleges, special schools and day services to set up their learners and follow their progress
  • A certificate for the game, once it has been reviewed by The CPD Group
  • The game in Welsh, then more of the languages our courses come in
  • More lessons, and more of our courses taught this way
