Food Handler Essentials

The two courses every food handler should have: food safety and hygiene, and the 14 allergens.

Why you need it

  • The law asks for it

Food businesses must make sure everyone who handles food is supervised and instructed or trained in food hygiene to suit the work they do. This comes from Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 (Annex II, Chapter XII), which is part of UK law.

  • Allergens are where mistakes hurt people

You must be able to tell customers which of the 14 allergens are in the food you serve (Food Information Regulations 2014 in England, with equivalent rules in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). Staff who know the 14 and how cross-contact happens can give the right answer every time.

  • Inspectors look at training

At a food hygiene inspection the officer looks at how food is handled and how food safety is managed in the business, and staff training is part of that.

What's in it

£24 if bought separately · you save £5 £19 for one person

Every course is online and self-paced, with 12 months' access, a final assessment and a certificate in the person's name that anyone can check online. Certificates are issued in English.

For yourself

Buy it with a personal account and you're enrolled on every course straight away. Start any of them from My Courses, in any order.

For your team

Buy one per person with a business account. Each course arrives as seats on your Team page; give a seat to each member of staff, including people without an email address.

Training helps your team do the job safely. It can't guarantee a food hygiene rating: only the council gives the rating.
