Pest Sighting Log

Why you need it

A single dropping may not look serious, but repeated sightings in one place point to a problem that needs dealing with. Food law requires procedures to control pests, and a log helps you show that each sighting was acted on and followed up.

Your pest contractor can also use it to spot patterns.

What it’s for

A log for every sign of pests: date, time and who reported it, the exact location, the pest or evidence seen, the immediate action and whether the contractor was told, and who closed it. It includes when to stop work and clean before restarting.

How to use it

1. Write your pest contractor’s name and contact number at the top so staff can call quickly.
2. Record each sighting straight away, with the exact location, such as the shelf or corner.
3. Stop work in the area if food is at risk, discard contaminated food, and clean and disinfect before restarting.
4. Only mark an entry closed when a follow-up check shows the problem is resolved.
5. Keep the log with your pest control reports and go through it with your contractor at each visit.
